NRCAN collects and analyzes information on Canada's as well as global minerals and metals markets. NRCan also conducts commodity, industry and market research, analysis, and assists with policy/program development with respect to the metal and nonmetallic mineral industries. Advice is provided to the Government of Canada and others with interest in the performance of mineral and metal commodities and industries, and the responsible development of mineral resources
Information and analysis is published and is used in various domestic and international fora. Application of this work covers a wide range of issues including the Safe Use Principle and materials life cycle approaches for minerals and metals, the competitiveness and sustainability of the industry, market access and trade related to Canada's mining and metals industries and related products, and recycling of end‑of‑life products, especially those containing minerals and metals.
Each year, NRCAN undertakes a comprehensive review of developments in the mineral industry and publishes the results as the Canadian Minerals Yearbook. This publication forms a continuing historical record of Canada's minerals and metals industries from year to year.
