Special Edition Maps for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games

To commemorate the Vancouver Olympics and Canadian Olympians, the federal government department Natural Resources Canada has developed a series of special interactive maps.

The Winter Olympic Medallists Map shows the birthplace of past Canadian Winter Olympic and Paralympic medallists with links from the map to athlete profiles on the official Winter Olympics Web site. This interactive map will be updated during the Olympics to show the birthplace of each of Canada’s new medallists, as new medals are awarded.

The Winter Sports Map shows the participation rates of Canadians in the three most popular winter sports: ice hockey, downhill skiing (including snowboarding) and skating.

The interactive Geography of the Vancouver Games Region Map allows visitors to locate and view Olympic facilities across the Greater Vancouver–Whistler area using a detailed topographic map. Additional map information can be activated to show the population, climate, physical environment and economy of the region.

Natural Resources Canada has also produced a selection of topographic maps, in part to assist Canada’s Department of National Defence and others in the provision of safety and security during the Games.

Maps and other location-based (or geospatial) information from Natural Resources Canada help decision-makers tackle some of Canada's most pressing challenges including:

  • the planning of high-profile international events such as the Vancouver Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games;
  • providing local infrastructure to deliver everyday public health and safety services; and
  • managing the sustainable development of Canada's natural resources.
