Federal Student Work Experience Program
The Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) provides full-time secondary school, CEGEP, college, technical institute and university students access to student jobs offered by the federal government. The objective of the program is to provide students with opportunities to learn about the federal government and gain valuable experience while developing and improving their employability skills.
NRCan has three student employment programs under FSWEP:
- NRCan Student Employment Program
- NRCan Employment Equity Student Program
- Canadian Forest Service Aboriginal Student Employment Program
For more information, visit Public Service Commission FSWEP.
Post-secondary Co-operative Education/Internship Program
Having recognized the mutual benefit offered by co-operative education initiatives, the federal Public Service continues to be the nation's largest single employer of students enrolled in co-op programs in Canada. Since 1990, the federal government has employed over 5000 students each year under this program. In partnership with participating academic institutions, the federal Public Service plays an important role in providing post-secondary students with the relevant and practical work experience they need to fulfill the requirements of their academic program.
For more information, visit Public Service Commission Post-secondary Co-op/Internship Program.
Research Affiliate Program
The Research Affiliate Program is specifically designed to give post-secondary students experience in applied research (design, execution, evaluation), when they must attain such knowledge and skills to graduate.
Students are normally placed with ongoing research operations in federal government facilities. The research projects must be related to the student's current degree program and must help the student develop specific knowledge and research skills.

Federal Public Sector Youth Internship Program
Sponsored by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada and delivered in partnership with the YMCA, the Federal Public Sector Youth Internship Program places interns in host federal government organizations. Its main objective is to enable unemployed or under-employed young Canadians between the ages of 15 and 30 to acquire the experience and skills they need to enter and fully participate in the labour market.

Science and Technology Internship Program

Interested graduates are encouraged to market themselves directly to eligible partners as possible candidates for internships. A partner will then contact NRCan with an internship proposal.
Note: Eligible partners are those whose work is related to natural resource sciences, and include private sector organizations, non-federal government organizations, provincial governments, non-profit organizations, colleges and universities.

Visiting Fellowships Program
Have you received a doctoral degree in the natural sciences or engineering field from a recognized university within the past five years? The Visiting Fellowships Program provides opportunities to work in Canadian government laboratories and research institutions.
Several departments and agencies, including Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), participate in this program. It is administered by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). The value of an award for the Visiting Fellowship program starts at $43,724 per year for one year, renewable for up to two more years, depending on the funding availability of the Canadian laboratory.
